My sister Natalie – she is a newbie learning to coupon. She is taking baby steps and sharing them with you. If you want to start small, be sure to check in for Nat’s Newbie Shopping Trips. These trips aren’t perfect – but these are things that you can expect to happen along the way.
Natalie headed out to CVS again this week with the scenario I posted here.
She started with a $2.99 ECB that she earned on her transactions here.
Here is what she did:
(1) Fig Newtowns $2.50
(1) SoftSoap $2.99
(1) CVS Healthcare $3.69
(1) Bengay $5.49
(1) Refresh Brillant $6.79
Total:$21.46
used Free Fig Newtown Coupon
used $5.00/1 Bengay in 9/11 inserts
used $1.00/1 Refresh Brillant
used $.75/1 Softsoap Coupon
used $2.99 ECB earned last week
$9.02 after coupons & ECB
Earned $6.79 Refresh ECB
Earned $3.69 CVS Healthcare
Earned $2.00 from Softsoap
You can see all the matchups here and see two scenarios for free items here.
Note: Many of you are asking about the coupon for the Bengay. Natalie followed the ad here with her coupon:
She wasn’t sure of the coupon so she asked the manager. As a newbie, this is a confusing situation – I think Natalie did the right thing by checking with the manager since she was unsure. I don’t have the actual coupon that she used, so I am not sure what the verbiage is – but these are things that are going to happen when you first start out.
How did you do this week at CVS?
Julie says

I did a similar transaction to Shanta – with the Air Wick deal – but my cashier STRONGLY told me should couldn’t accept 4 like coupons for the air wick (yes, i bought 4) – she said “this is a new store rule as of last week – if the barcode numbers are the same we can’t accept more than one” – this confused me SO much – i think the look on my face must have been very odd – because all coupons from the paper would have the same barcode?? i don’t normally ask for a manager – but i really wanted the air wick – and i was so grateful they had the stock in – so the manager came over – and my cashier was wrong – she misunderstood the memo they were given last week than you cannot use two coupons with the same barcode number for ONE item (i’m assuming this policy might have something to do with the shave cream last week?) but i’m proud of myself for sticking to my guns, usually i’ll just have them remove the problem product and do a little more research to make sure i was correct before i go back and attempt to purchase it later in the week.

Walgreens has the Bengay 4oz for $5.99.
A better deal than the 2oz at CVS.
Jess says
I stood in the store looking at the Bengay and was very confused. The coupon clearly states what kinds and that its is for the 4oz. The ad shows it as being for the $5.49, 2oz. I didn’t pick it up because I was confused and I am a novice at this. I guess I will need to make a trip back to CVS and get the Bengay, if it has worked for everyone else.
Shanta says
Hi Shannon, I did well at CVS this week. (I sent one to u). I would like to share this with your readers as well….This is what i did….
(3) Air Wick odor Detect @$4.99 each ($14.97)
(2) Air Wick I-Motion @$4.99 each ($9.98)-there’s a reason I bought 5 Air Wick…
(1) Xtra Laundry detergent @$1.49 each (filler)
=Total $26.44 before tax
-(5) $4/1 Air Wick Freshmatic (8/14 SS exp 9/25/11)
-$5.00 off $25 received via email
= $1.56 OOP
earned $10.00 EBC + $2.00 Savingstar rebate
All FREE + $10.44 overage after EBC & rebate
Since they were really high valued coupons, I purchased the detergent(on sale of course) to make sure the transaction would be above $5, to cover the $5 off $25!!!!! Happy Saving everyone:)

I got the same kind of bengay and my coupon worked, no override needed
Jennifer says
I’m not one to raise a fuss, but If i needed the Bengay and the ad shows it that way, I would be pushing them to put it through. The company made a boo boo here, not the average person using the ad as a guide. I’m glad the let her use it.
Jeannette sparr says
She actually used the Bengay coupon on that kind?? My store did not allow it because the coupon clearly states the kinds it is good on, and the regular kind is not one of them. Did the cashier over-ride it?
Shannon says
Yes she did. CVS honored the coupon because it is presented that way in the ad.
Brittany says
My $5 bengay coupon stated that it could be used on a bengay cold relief or bengay cream 4oz. Do you know if your coupon stated that? The bengays on sale at CVS were 2oz so wasn’t sure if the coupon would work?
Shannon says
Brittany see my update in the post.
