Another coupon policy change:
Dollar General has updated their coupon policy as of 6/23/11. The key changes are highlighted in red. Thanks to Delia for the heads up.
Our coupon requirements are as follows:
Dollar General accepts Manufacturer’s and Dollar General issued coupons (Including internet coupons) that meet these requirements:
- Coupons must be original (no photocopies)
- Coupons must have a scan-able barcode or valid promotion code
- Coupons must have a printed expiration date
- Coupons can be redeemed only for items sold at Dollar General, and can be redeemed only for the exact same item (package weight, size, etc.)
- Coupons for free items are only accepted if a purchase is required to get one free
- Maximum of two coupons per item. One coupon must be a Manufacturer’s Coupon and the second coupon must be a Dollar General Coupon as long as neither coupon states that it is not valid with other coupons.
Dollar General will NOT accept coupons that:
- Are from other retailers
- Are expired
- Are internet coupons without a scan-able barcode and/or promotion code
- Contain the combination of an invalid barcode that won’t scan and promotion code that the register will not accept
- Are for “free” items, unless a purchase is required (i.e. Buy one get one free is acceptable)
- Do not have a “remit to:” address on the coupon
In addition:“Cash Back” will not be issued if the value of the coupon is greater than the purchase price of the item.

DG really needs to educate their employees on the coupon policy. I was buying 2 Axe bodywash today using a coupon for each and was told by the cashier that I could only use one coupon per customer. I didn’t even fight with her, I just left because it was a losing situation to fight. I will find out who the DM in Maryland is and make a complaint. I’m ready to give up using coupons.

I am glad I am not the only one! In MD I tried to get BEN GAY with a 4/1. The DG Q was 3.79 and like other’s only wanted the item. The Manager would not take my coupon and was not very polite when she denied it. She went on to tell me that she had a bad day and wasn’t about to take my coupon’s for something that was more then the product. It seems to always be a problem when I shop at the DG with coupon’s no matter what the situation is. I very seldom shop there anymore. Very unsatisfied customer here!

I visited 2 of your stores tonight.I was in your store located on 56th street in Temple Terrace Florida and the store located on Busch Blvd in Tampa. I found it extremely frustrating when I was not able to redeem my coupons. The cashier would not accept my coupons because the face value exceeds the purchase price of 0.25$, even though they were the exact product advertised on the coupon. Even the picture matched the product in my cart. I told the cashier that I was not interested in cash back. I had a cart full of items I wanted to purchase. I believe the overage from the coupon should be applied to the purchase. They refused to accept my transaction. After an hour in the store shopping I still left the store empty handed. The associate was extremely rude saying “nope” when i quoted the coupon policy. She said if the coupon’s face value exceeds the product price then I can not use it in their store. If I cannot use my coupons in this store I will chose to go elsewhere. People shop at this store to get the most savings for their money. Should I plan my future shopping trips at the Family Dollar? If the policy does not work in favor of the customers please let me know so that I can change my preferred store. As a single mother I need to save all the change I can. Please inform me if I am reading the policy incorrectly. Thank you – Jessica Bartels

Jessica,
As a former Family Dollar employee, I can tell you that their coupon policy is exactly the same as it is for Dollar General. Family Dollar will not let you use a coupon that is for more than the purchase price for any reason. Free coupons are not allowed unless it requires a purchase such as B1G1. I hope this helped you.
