Am I the Only One?

November 5, 2009

blu rayI don’t have a Blu-ray. There, I said it.

I usually like to consider myself technology forward. We bought an HD DVD player not to long before the HD format went bye-bye (Thanks, Toshiba).

Now, I see Blu-rays everywhere. Everyone is purchasing them. I am starting to get a complex.  My mother said she just buying Blu-rays now. She doesn’t even have a Blu-ray player! Peer pressure to be like everyone else! I asked her what she intended on doing with them and she said, well I will have a Blu-ray soon.  Are DVDs going to fade away and go to 8-Track  heaven?  (For those of you who are too young to remember 8-track tapes, you really missed out.)

Please tell me that you too are in the stone ages and simply have a DVD player. Better yet, if you still use your VHS.  Our last VHS player just died a few months ago and I was quite sad. It was like the end of an era.  Most of our VHS tapes were Disney movies for my son and we haven’t replaced them.

Do I have to take this plunge? What am I missing out on?

My husband is definitely a tech/gadget guy, as you know. He is usually all over new electronic toys, and we don’t have one either! He isn’t convinced the technology is superior enough to justify the costs. Also, everything will be backwards compatible now, like video games, so if we ever do upgrade all our old DVDs will still play.

We had a DVD player before most people in our circle had even heard of it so the fact that he isn’t all over the HD thing to go with his HDTV and his home theater system tells me it just isn’t there yet. We’re not jumping on a bandwagon just because it’s riding by, although I ask him each year around this time if he’d want one for Christmas.

    • Shannon says:

      Wow Spencer doesn’t have a Blu-ray? I am shocked!

      • Heather says:

That’s how you know it isn’t really worth it yet! Although, he has been lobbying for a PS3, using the Blue-ray bonus as an excuse. We have enough gaming systems around here!

  2. Abby says:

We don’t have a Blu-Ray! It hasn’t even crossed my mind to buy one … And we’re unapologetic fans of television and movies, so it isn’t as if we wouldn’t appreciate it.

And while our home VHS player has been gone for a while, I was recently at a yard sale where people were scooping up kids’ VHS tapes by the armful – which makes me think that LOTS of people still have them.

  3. Keathe says:

We still use out VHS player. A lot. We do have a regular DVD player, but don’t have blueray yet. I really hope they don’t start phasing out the regular dvds until the blueray player comes down a TON in price. I can’t justify the cost (especially since I don’t have an HD tv to play it on. Yes, my tv is a dinosaur too!)

    • Shannon says:

      Keathe,

What do you think you will do once you switch? Is there alot of VHS movies you watch on a regular basis. I am just wondering what you do with all the VHS movies? I have about 60 movies and could never think of replacing them on DVD.

  4. Maria says:

We don’t have a Blu-Ray player. We also don’t have a flat panal TV or many other gadgets. My husband and I have been focusing our financial efforts in other areas and so I’ve had a difficult time justifying buying them – more than not buying them ( I really, really want to get rid of our old TV). I actually am a gadget girl and have a lot of new technologies. as well as the latest ofor computers, but I stopped for a little bit to catch my breath more or less. So don’t worry you’re definitely not alone:)

  5. Jennifer says:

We have a Blu-ray honestly only because we received it as a gift. We mostly rent our movies from Redbox and I haven’t noticed if they even offer Blu-ray movies. I think we have rented a few movies that were Blu-ray when we had Netflix and I really forgot that they were Blu-ray when I was watching the movie. We also have a DVD player and I really would have just been fine having that so I don’t think you are missing out at all!

  6. Angela says:

We are definitely still rocking the DVD/VHS combo :) My theory is that by the time everyone replaces all their movies with Blu-Ray the next technology (I foresee some kind of SD format) will be rolling out and everyone will have to replace again. For now, I’m not fixing what’s not broken. Besides, like most other comments here, we don’t have an HDTV, so the added HD benefits of blu-ray are kind of lost on us. Then again, I’m also probably the only 25-year-old who uses her cell phone to make phone calls – no texts, no e-mails, no photo messaging, no MP3′s – just the calls, lol. I’m not sure if that makes me a techno-phobe . . .

  7. aMY says:

ha we have a PS3 which is a blue ray, but not one blue ray DVD! LOL

  8. Jennifer says:

Shannon, I know you are not all about keeping up with the Jones’–resist the blu-ray!

If your son still wants to watch those Disney movies on VHS, I’m sure you could find one on Craigs list or a yard sale real cheap. We still have our VHS, but don’t use it much. You want to know who’s really living in the stone ages–this girl! We have no DVR or On demand or anything like that, so we use the VCR to tape shows we want to watch!! Feel better now?

    • Shannon says:

      Jen,

I know I could count on you to make me feel better!

    • Holly says:

I’m with you Jennifer. We have 2 DVD players and 2 VHS players. No On demand or Tivo or DVR. I honestly don’t even know what Blu-ray is or how it is different from a DVD. We only have one TV hooked to cable. We love to be outside with the kids or playing games! TV and movies are overrated! And yes, we still “tape” shows on VHS tapes.

  9. Maria says:

We do not have one eaither!! And we have a VHS players :) ) we will change do blue Ray when we buy a new tv :) ) next year.

  10. Kelly W says:

No Blue Ray here! My DH talks about them from time to time but just because he likes to have every new gadget. He doesn’t even watch movies. :o )

I have tons of VHS Disney movies but no VCR that still works. I am sticking with DVD’s for now. I do own one Blue Ray but that was because of the Snow White Deal. LOL

  11. Candace says:

My husband and I are very tech savvy. We have both worked in tech support so we know how to use technology without difficulty, yet we don’t have blue-ray. It’s mainly because we are happy with the basic DVDs and don’t really want HD, even if we could afford it.

We still have our VCR but we rarely use it. I hate rewinding so we started replacing the VHS. I also have a lot of Disney VHS tapes, I haven’t replaced those since Disney movies tend to cost a lot.

We also have a older tv and I hate that shows are now filmed in widescreen and they get cut off on my tv (wish they would just letterbox it). My husband is dreading the day our tv dies. He doesn’t want any of the new ones. He used to sell TVs and he thinks that most of them are junk. You can’t fix a tv anymore. If it breaks you have to buy a new one. That is why my fil is out of work, he used to fix TVs but there are none around anymore that can really be fixed, and if they can it’s cheaper to buy a new one.

  12. Tamara says:

We don’t have a Blu-ray player either, my husband is a big gamer so we’re waiting for the PS3 price to come down and will use that as a Blu-ray player. But amazingly we already have a few blu-ray DVDs! We has asked for some last year when we first thought about getting a PS3, but with money being tight, we haven’t been able to justify getting one. Maybe 2010 will be the year! Although I suspect an iPhone will be purchased before a PS3 is :)

  13. Kim says:

We have 2 dvd players & a VHS. My daughter loves to watch all the old Disney movies on it. We’ll keep all of these until they die or we’re forced to upgrade. I still have VHS movies that I haven’t upgraded to dvd!

  14. Milissa E says:

Blueray? I am not really even sure what that is. I just thought they were tricked out DVDs. I still use VHS and DVD. I only know one person that has one in my circle of friends.

    You are not alone!!

  15. Darlene says:

I have two VHS/DVD combo units, the one was just bought last year…..love both of them…..actually the one in the living room actually can record both VHS or DVD and has a great little button to push to record from one to the other……you are not alone

  16. Melanie says:

No blue ray here! Still have a VHS/DVD Player and still do watch the VHS tapes. I did get rid of a ton of kids videos but no Disney ones. I had to keep those!!!

  17. Heidi says:

No bluray here either! We have so many regular DVDs that it doesn’t seem worth it to switch. And the only Bluray I own so far is the combo pack of Snow White because it was such a great deal and had a regular DVD too!

  18. Susan says:

Hi Shannon, I don’t think the Blu Ray’s will make it. I think it will be like the Beta players that didnt’ make it. I have watched movies on it and dont’ notice a difference at all. DThe movies are more expensive and I don’t see the point in paying more for the movies on blue ray if they arent’ any better. I am not planning on buying one!

    • Shannon says:

      Susan,

I cracked up at the Betas. We are showing our age here, but yes for those who don’t remember there was VHS and Beta. Beta never took!

  19. Annie says:

My husband and I have a PS3 but the only reason we bought one was because he works for a video game company and they gave us a $100 credit for a game console and he didn’t want it to go to waste. He specifically bought the PS3 because it is also a Bluray player instead of a Wii or X-box even though we don’t have an HDTV. We don’t even have cable or a digital converter box so we don’t watch any tv and we don’t own any Bluray movies but I guess we are preparing for the future. We have never owned a VCR since we have been married (5 years) and I just got rid of a bunch of VHS tapes that my husband had from before. So I’m not really tech-savvy but my husband is (and I just broke down and got him an iPhone) and he thinks the only Bluray player worth getting is the PS3. My brother-in-law who installs home theater systems also agrees. And I have to admit, for someone who is not that tech savvy, the PS3 is pretty cool. We even have out internet hooked up to it so we can use the internet on our tv. And then you can stream movies from Netflix.

  20. Stephanie says:

You are not alone! No blu-ray here! We still have about a50/50 ratio of DVD/VHS. We just replaced a VCR with one from a garage sale! 2 VCR’s,2 DVD’s, and 3 TV’s none in hi-def yet!

  21. kathy t says:

I must really so my age… I remember when the first VCR first came out, they were so expensive no one could afford them. They were big , clunky and had a hefty price tag. It’s amazing because that was almost 30 years ago and the price tag ranged from around $500.00 to $1500.00.
I probably will get a blu-ray at some point but I am waiting for the prices to drop…

  22. kathy t says:

Target has a memorex blu-ray/dvd player combo on sale at target tomorrow for $99.00.
