Walmart has issued an official Walmart Coupon Policy for 2011. You can view and print the Walmart Coupon Policy here.
Here’s what Wal-mart WILL accept:
- Manufacturer’s coupons
- Printed at Home coupons (internet or IP coupons)– WILL NOT accept printed at home coupons for items that require no purchase (“free” item coupons). Buy 1, get 1 free coupons require a purchase so these are valid. Coupons MUST be legible, have “manufacturer’s coupon” written on it, have a valid remit address for the manufacturer, valid expiration date and a bar code that is scannable.
- Competitor’s coupons that feature a SPECIFIC ITEM FOR A SPECIFIC PRICE. For example, a coupon that says: Kelloggs Cornflakes $2.99. This is like price matching from a competitor’s ad. They WILL NOT accept any other store coupons that say, for example: $.50/1 Tide or 50% off Tide.
- Competitor’s “Check Out Coupons” or catalinas. They MUST be legible, have “manufacturer’s coupon” written on them with specific requirements, a valid remit address for the manufacturer on them, a valid expiration date and a scannable bar code.
- Soft drink container caps
Wal-mart WILL NOT accept:
- Print at home internet coupons that require no purchase. (aka free product coupons)
- Other competitors store coupons for dollar or cents off a product, percent off a product, buy 1 get 1 free, or double-triple off. To make this clear NO Store coupons from other places will be accepted unless they are for a specific item at a specific price. For example: you have a coupon for Tide liquid detergent and the coupon states it is to be sold for $5.99. Wal-mart will then take the coupon and sell you the Tide for $5.99.
Wal-mart Guidelines and Limitations:
- Limit 1 coupon per item
- Coupons must have an expiration date and be used prior to expiration
- Coupons MAY EXCEED THE PRICE OF THE ITEM. Change may be given or applied towards the cost of the basket purchase.
- We only accept coupons for the merchandise we sell.
- Coupons must be presented at the time of purchase.
- We accept the following with Customer Service Supervisor or Management approval:
- 40 or more coupons
- Any coupon over $20.00
- $50.00 or more in coupons in a single transaction

i have had two bad experences with WM this week for the first time ,first i used a coupon i have used b 4 at WM cashier took it scaned it and wrote in the price which was 24.98 this was a gift certifate, then she calle CSM over and she told me they dont except these type altho i have used them in the pass, but it had no experation date so i came home read policy and found out they dont except non dated coupons–heres the problem THE CASHIER DIDNT KNOW IT EITHER AND WROTE ON MY COUPON RENDERING IT USELESS NOW,and CSM was no help at all RUDE and unhelpful–later in the week i took some coupons in and had 2 like coupons i purchased two items and same VSM told me only one coupon per purchase i know this but she thinks a purchase it a transation and would only let me use one per total order and i had to ring second seperatly -WAKE UP WM U ARE LOSING CUSTOMERS BECAUSE YOUR POORLY TRAINED CASHIERS AND CSM – i am now venturing out into other stores to see how me and my coupons will be treated WM you are a big chain but everytime u lose a customer they dont return
Mary says
Walmart in Waverly,Ohio will no longer let you stack coupons. One coupon per item know!
lee says
If you use your coupons at walmart , they tax you on the
total then take your coupons off and tax you again. So your
hardly saving anything!
Debbie says
Our Walmart would only let me use 1 coupon because it says “one coupon per purchase”. They take that as 1 coupon per store visit. Is that correct? They got out magnifying glasses to read it. It seems ridiculous to me, but I would like to really know if that’s what that means?
Traci says
Good luck with any coupons at Walmart. I have been in several times with coupons and I have gotten different answers on what they take. I was even told oh it depends on what cashier you go to.? Really. We even went and printed out the coupon policy and was still DENIED our coupons. They told us that it was not updated online. Next time we had issues we called corporate to find out what is going on and was told that all the coupons and ad matches that we wanted to do they do but was denied. I give up with walmart and will shop at frys or safeway where I never ever have an issue with coupons.
stone says
I just came back from Walmart where I purchased 10 packs of kotex naturals panty liners (priced at$ .94 ea.) and 6 packs of u kotex panty liners priced at $1.24 ea.. I used 5)$ 1.50 off 2 and 6)$ 1.00 off each. Walmart honored all coupons without batting an eye an I paid 3.38 total for all 16 items. I am going back in a couple of days to get another 20-30 paks of ea.
laura says
so if i have a $1.00 off Simply orange juice, and I purchase the small bottle (says any size)the cost is $1.00, will Walmart take it?

yes./

Can we use the RR from walgreens at walmart? I noticed some of my RR have “redeemable only at walgreens” printed on the bottom???
amber says
can u use a BOGO and a $1.00 off two items in a transaction???? i have $1.00 off two old spice and then i have the buy one old spice body wash and get a body spary free???? i was told i couldnt do it but i witness 3 ppl do it the night before with no problem….. they told me that i was trying to double coupons….
Shannon says
Amber,
No you cannot . You can only use a BOGO and a $1.00/1 not a $1.00/2.
Jessica says
I also tried this exact same coupon tonight at my WM. The manager told me the same thing. Could not use $1.00/2 and a BOGO. So my reply was ” So, I can buy two trial size then it and then the body spray will work?” She said, No that WM no longer accepts any coupons on anything that is trial size. I showed her that the coupon did not specify a size, It said on ANY. She proceeded to tell me that NO coupons were taken on trial size products of any kind. She could not show me where it said that on the coupon policy and acted very rude that I even mentioned it. I will be calling 1-800-Walmart tomorrow. Most cashiers and managers have never even saw the coupon policy much less understand it, The last time I showed it to a manager they asked if they could make a copy of it because they didnt have one. Come on, its sad that the customer knows more than the employee.
Cheryl says
a ? please, I went to walmart today and had a coupon for 50 cents off tide so i got the travel size it did not have a required size but the machine would not take it and the lady said cause it did not look like the pic. is this right cause it only says 50 cents off one tide detergent and on side it says limit one coupon per purchase of products and quantities. she got another cashier and she said no machine wont take it cause it did not look like the picture. then i price match 3 boxes of cereal for $5 at with smiths and when i gave the coupon it did not take 1st time cause she had it bent and she said it was cause she already put the price down. I told her to try again and that the coupon was bent well low and behold she did it again not bent at counter and it took it. so on tide any help please thank you
Jennifer says
I understood that walmart would match cvs, rite-aid, etc with the RR and the card. I was informed this evening that two weeks ago the corporate policy changed and they do not comp unless the actual price of the product is specified in the ad. For example, they WILL NOT accept RR or Rite-aid, or CVS purchases that give you dollars toward a future purchase. After spending a couple hours in walmart getting my purchases together, I had to put over half of it back because it was ECB’s from CVS, and RR from Walgreens, and The carecard from Riteaid. I was so aggravated. They are changing their policies so much that you can’t keep up with them.
Traci says
Agreed! They have no idea what they do or do not take. Go to Frys or Safeway, you will never have issues with them
Tanya says
Ok, but she DID pay full price for the first one, so shouldn’t the $2 be coming off the one that she paid for? I understand they can’t take it off the free one, but she was getting the 2nd one free BECAUSE she bought the first one at full price. She’s taking the $2 off the one she’s paying for. I’m wondering because I have a similar situation for Degree deodorant that I need to use by Saturday. I have a buy one get one free and a 75 cents off one. Neither specifies size or says “equal or lesser value”, so my question is can I buy the trial size as the buy one, a full size for the free one (coupon is for up to $6) and the 75 cents off the one I paid for (the trial size)? 2 items, 2 coupons. I’d be paying about 25 cents!
Pam says
I had a situation today at walmart. I had bogo frosted mini wheats. I bought one and got one free, but then I wanted to use $1 coupon for the one I purchased. The cashier was extremely rude and told me I was unable to use it. I was frustrated with his rudeness and didn’t feel like arguing. I don’t know why I wouldn’t be able to use the coupon on the one I purchased, right?
Shannon says
Pam, it depends on the coupon.
Angela says
It depends on the coupons. Some coupons will specifically say “not to be used with other discounts”. Saying you only get THIS coupon and no others. Some coupons do not state this, and therefore you COULD use an additional coupon as well.
kinzy says
What does walmart give for soft drink container caps?
alena svetelska says
I went to walmart with 100 coupons last time, cash register lock down but after manager came and unlock register all my coupons went through saved $70 in coupons;-)

Will WM double / triple the coupons?
Shannon says
No.

I use coupons from walgreens and everywhere else at walmart the clerks always stand around and oooo and ahhh when i ise all my coupons LOL the only thing i don’t like is the 1 coupon per item policy Ughhh i wish they allowed stacking! :(
heather says
im new at this and i was wondering if walmart will match the prices of things from cvs if the price from cvs is only good with the extra care card?
Shannon says
Yes.
VICKIE says
CAN I USE A $5.00 OFF $30.00 COUPON FROM PUBLIX AT WALMART?
clipper says
Great site! I’m new to all of this, so it is very helpful!
So if I take my Rite-Aid sale paper to Walmart, they’ll sale me the advertised items at Rite-Aid’s price?
Shannon says
If you have a rite aid local, yep!
Mimi says
How does Walmart treat overages? Will i be able to use the overage from my coupons to purchase something else? Example… Lets say I have a 3.00 overage will i be able to use that to buy a gallon of milk?
Shannon says
Yes Mimi, you can use the overage on milk.
KKayla says
My mom and I had a HORRIBLE shopping experience at wm yesterday! The cashier behind us NOT the one checking us out, seen us price matching and also using coupons and she was mad so she proceeds to go and get the asst.manager. So the asst. manager comes over and informs us that we CANNOT match prices and use coupons. So we just called up the main office to find out the policy and they informed us that we could do that. So we go back in and approach the asst. mgr and tell her what the main office said and she was BOILING HOT! She acted as if we were trying to rob the store she treated us so bad that we just left. Glad I printed out the policy can’t wait to go back to wm!!!
Anonymous says
good for u KKayla, they need get theer storied straight
sarah says
i am also a newbie at this. i have googled free printable coupons and every site i go to has just about the same items. do i need to just go straight to the manufacturers site? and what is the best place to get printable coupons?
Shannon says
There are only so many sites with printable coupons. There are three major providers, if you look at the top of the site here, and go to the coupons menu, you will get a list of all the places you canfind coupons.. or you can use the coupon database.
martha says
I believe they come out with new manufacture’s coupons every 30 days, so keep checking back to see if they have new ones. I did that, and even though some of the coupons were the same, the expiration dates had changed. I also found a few coupons on there that weren’t on their database the day prior. So, just keep looking.
Sonya says
I’m really new at this couponing strategy – I also have BJ’s in store coupons but on the back it does state that its a manufacturer’s in club coupon. AND there is an amount of i.e., $2 off bounty napkins with a count of 600 or larger. So here is my question; Can I use THIS coupon at Walmart (because they have a sale on these napkins) and because the count on their package is 220ct on sale for 3.97each. would I have to buy 3 packages to bring the total count up to the coupon requirements? Will Walmart “honor” that coupon as such. The other Walmart policy is that they has to be a clear remit address on the coupon… the BJs booklet coupons don’t have a specific address other than the name BJs as a location. I would love to use these coupons at walmart and be able to get these types of staples on walmart sales instead of buying BJs bulk pricing… Thanks for any info you can provide.
Shannon says
Sonya,
I do not believe Walmart will honro these coupons.
Crystal says
Will Wal-Mart take a caterpillar discount card for Walgreens?
Kristina says
I got 17 items at Walmart for $10.51 using only manufactuers coupons. I found out that they do not “stack” coupons. For example I had a $5 coupon from the manufactuer and the competitor for the same product-I was only allow to use one coupon for each item per the cashier.
Is this right? I know you can do this at Target and Publix…just kinda surprise about Walmart.
April Lane says
I went to Walmart today and had 2 coupons to use on 2 items and I was told that I could not use both of them. 1 is for BOGO Free “Off Clip ON Mosquito Repellent Starter Kit” up to $10.00. and the other one is for Save $2.00 on any “Off Clip ON Mosquito Repellent Starter Kit”. I thought that since I am technically buying 2 items and using 2 coupons, I could do this like I do at CVS or Walgreens. Any Help?
Amy says
Buy one get one free means your techically not paying for the second item. So without a $ price attached to that item you can not get money off of an item your paying nothing for. This is the policy in a lot of stores.
Heather says
I think it all depends on the cashier you get. I have been using the bogo gillette deodorant that has a max value of 4.99 and two of the cashiers gave me the entire price of the twin pack deodorants (7.93) and others have only given me the max value. My cashier today told me they do take all competitors coupons and they will price match, like if you have the entire sales ad, and they will take a coupon on that item. Example: CVS is advertising Purex for 1.98 and I have a $1 off coupon. She said they could do that.
Miriam says
I’m new to this coupon thing can i use my manufactures coupon in any stores such as Alberstsons, Target, Walmart, Stater Bros, Ralphs, and i know you can’t use two of the same coupons on the same item but can you use the store coupon and a mfr coupon on the same item?
melanie says
Do you have to hand over a competitors coupon….walgreens coupon for example…when they price match? Or will they just price match the coupon….is a competitors coypon of any value to them?
Ashley says
We are told to take the coupon even if it is a competitors coupon, that way you don’t keep going back and getting more. Because you wouldn’t be allowed to do that at that specific store. It will get priced matched though.
sandy says
does walmart accept target web coupons?
Shannon says
Sandy,
No unless they meet these terms:
Competitor’s coupons that feature a SPECIFIC ITEM FOR A SPECIFIC PRICE. For example, a coupon that says: Kelloggs Cornflakes $2.99. This is like price matching from a competitor’s ad. They WILL NOT accept any other store coupons that say, for example: $.50/1 Tide or 50% off Tide.
Freddee says
I tried using a manufactored coupon that came out of catalina from Safeway. Safeways logo was on the coupons so my Walmart would not take it. But after reading the coupon policy here and I think I’m reading it right, I can use it.
Tammy says
Well I used bj’s coupons at walmart not long ago one transaction was over 80 bucks and my bill was only $22 the lady got so upset she shut her register down hollared at 2 managers that told her she had to take them!!! So next time my bill was over $40 and I paid $2.09 well at that store (went to a different location that time) they were very happy for me!!!! It wasnt the first ladies money and I got treated horribly from her for it and she kept me and my sister in line for almost and hour complaining. Then she hid over $10 in coupons from my sister in law we discovered later. Walmart has upset me with that one!!!
Amber says
and we do NOT give you cash back for the coupon if you get like, 2 dollars off of the item and the item only costs 1 dollar.
Tiffany says
Looks like the official policy was updated recently (may 12th, 2011) and it states that you DO in fact give cash back or apply it to the total basket purchase in the case of an overage.
cropper423 says
Not necessary to be so rude in your responses to people trying to save money in this economy.
Amber says
We do NOT double.. The store has to be within I believe 40 miles and it has to be the EXACT same item.
Janice M says
If I have one coupon for .50 off an item & a different coupon with a different price off or a different expiration date for the same item, can I use both coupons for that transaction since the coupons are different? Also, does Walmart honor the “price with card” prices? They say they honor any local competitor ads… How far can the stores be away from the walmarts for them to still honor?
Shannon says
@Janice M,
No you may not — you may only use one manufacturer coupon per item.
Kelli says
Can you double coupons??
Shannon says
@Kelli,
No. they do not double.
Brittany says
Does Walmart comp the price after rewards at places like Rite Aid, Walgreens or CVS? Or is it only the before price? For example, If Tide is $5.99 and CVS gives you $1 off reward, can I comp Tide for $4.99 at Walmart? I’m new to the coupon thing and cant find this in the Walmart policy. Thanks!
ruby says
my sister inlaw went to walmart an she used her albertsons teice the value coupons an a manufacture coupon for the homemade mac an cheess making them free because they were 2.00 at walmart an at albertsons they were 2.99 so i paid .99 cents with my manufacture an my doubler an she wetn to walmart an used they albertsons doubler an the manufacture coupon so she got them for free i didnt know walmart takes albertsons doublers??????
Mark says
Does Walmart have a douple or triple coupon day? Or I will need to call my store and ask a manager for details?
margo says
At this time all Walmarts do not double or triple coupons. Maybe in the future. All we can do is write home office and maybe they might consider it.
Shirly says
Sometimes they act like the money we’re trying to save is coming directly out of their pockets.
Makes me so infuriated!
Lisa says
it says one coupon per item, so if you have a store coupon and a manufacturers coupon, you can’t use both? I was told you could.
Shannon says
Walmart does not offer store coupons.
Ladyfatcat59 says
coupons are coupons and if it helps anyone out even a little bit maybe Walmart should give a day or two for double and triple coupons. It’s not like they are gonna loose a ton of money.
Lisa Lovel says
Walmart wont lose a ton of money but there employess will lose there profit sharing do to your greed.
cropper423 says
It’s not greed…it’s being smart with your money and learning to save anywhere you can. It all adds up. It doesn’t come out of their profit sharing, they get there $ back from the manufacturer.
Carrie says
What does it mean under Limit one coupon per item and then says: $50.00 or more in coupons in a single transaction?? I can only do 1 coupon per $50 or $50 worth of coupons per transaction?? Thanks! :D
Shannon says
one per
Sarah says
its one coup per item,(13 coupos-13 items) but once the total of coupon amount reaches $50. they just need manager approval, but you can go past that, also once you use 40 coupons they will need manager approval
jacky says
is it 40 per items or 40 per transaction?
Jamie says
I use multiple coupons at my Walmart but I try not to push it. For instance I just used 3 Nivea Body Wash coupons to get 3 free and no one questioned it. I have had more trouble at Target using multiple coupons per purchase. As far as ringing stuff up seperately, well that’s just their own foolishness at work because the computer will scan multiples per purchase and the manager should know that.
larissa says
I have noticed its easier to use coupons at price chopper, but also it depends of the casheir u go 2, no offence to the older generation but i noticed if they are 35 or older they give u dirty looks or an attitude, if they are younger around 16-20 they usuially try and go faster because they just want you out of there “always nice to cut checkout in half” but they usuially give you less attitude!
Erin says
I’m a coupon newbie and I’ve only shopped at Target once with coupons, but my experience was great! My total was around $15 before coupons, and I got it down to around $5! My cashier was so excited for me – she said she loves seeing people save money :) So it mostly just depends on which cashier you go to.
Becky says
I love couponing at Target. They usually do not have a lot of sales that suit me but when they do, they are always so nice about it. Did you know that if you go to the Target website, down at the bottom they have coupons. Some are manufactures coupons and some are Target store coupons, you never know until you print them. Anyways, you can use one Target coupon AND one manufactures coupon for the same item. Example: Target has a coupon for $.55/1 Cherrios. then there is a coupon in the Sunday paper for $.55/1 Cherrios. You can use both and save $1.10 on ONE box of Cherrios. Good luck with your couponing. I have been doing it for just a few months but already have enough body wash, toothpaste, and deoderant to last my family of 6 a year!
Tina says
Hi, I’m a newbie. I went to Walmart yesterday with 13 coupons for Degree anti-persirant. There was no size limitation so I got the travel size. They fought me on the price because they were 97cents and the coupon was for $1 then they told me that I could only use one coupon per perchase (as in visit). Thats not want the coupon said. Just to make me go away they rang each one up seperately charging me 4 cents 13 times! And boy was I getting some nasty looks from the manager. Was I wrong?
margo says
I ad match and do major coupons at Wal-mart every week. I also purchased Degree, I had 12 of them. I had no issues with checking out and cashier was fine with this. If you read policy it states you can do this. I always bring my Wal-mart policy with me just in case but have had no problem. Getting the travel size is the best and policy states you can have the credit for your remaining purchase. Do not let the cashiers get away with this. Call for a member of management. Could be cashier is new or a cashier has been with the company so long that they are not up to date with Wal-marts changes. I think Wal-mart is doing a great job with their policies. Don’t let one cashier stop you for saving money.
Jenn says
Tina-this happened to me but with the free black flag fly swatters. He would only take one coupon (I only had 4) AND he changed the coupon price lower just to cover the fly swatter and gave me no overage. I will be sure to bring my policy with me and educate them next time.
kellie says
per purchase means 1 coupon per item you are purchasing.
a transaction is your total order. you should have been able to use 12 coupons for 12 items in 1 transaction regardless of how many were the same item. the policy states that only one coupon per purchase.( meaning one couopon per item you are buying) not one coupon per transaction. print the policy and bring it with you. couponing is just getting popular so many cashiers may not know the policy. so if you have it handy you cand just show it to them. hope this helped.
Lisa says
I was told today by my Walmart that now the words “purchase” and “transaction” mean the same thing! I had 4 coupons for bandaids and had to check and pay for each one individualy!
I am so frustrated!
Valerie says
I appreciate the compliment….I work for Walmart

Here is a suggestion for everyone:
Since Walmart has updated the coupon policy, I encourage everyone to Email, Fax and even call Walmart CEO on complimenting the change on policy. Also, please share your horrible experience with Michael Duke. Ask him for his advice on making your future shopping experience smooth as possible avoiding past experience of you and others. Lastly, share this thread, other thread and blogs.

@vodreaux, April 1st was told in my walmart no longer accepting ecoupons and they were 2 coupons printed from the walmart site!! Constant changes, brand product removal, the list goes on and on. Sorry people but Lower Prices! Lower Standards!
Christy Garner says
I have been treated like crap at my walmart for using coupons. I had 6 like items with 6 matching coupons. Was told by csm that I could only use 1 coupon per transaction. I would have to leave the store and come back to purchase all the items I was wanting to purchase. I was so upset I walked out of the store with nothing. I am debating even shopping at Walmart again. This is wrong. I have the rules & guidelines downloaded on my smart phone but was told “I am not wasting my time with you”. Is this how Walmart trains there employees to treat the couponers?
Ddawbb says
Maybe this is why walgreens is testing out the points system instead? :(
Holly says
Is there a place on your site or online that we can save copies of other store’s coupon policys? Do you ask for them at the store itself and are the readily available? I have a feeling if I ask a teen at my local grocery store they’ll just give me a blank stare.
Shannon says
@Holly,
Some stores Holly — what are you looking for?
Holly says
@Shannon, Giant and Weis. I’m wondering where I can use my $6 off cat food coupons. I’m pretty sure one of them told me one time they only allow up to $4 off or something like it.
Thanks. :)
Kristin M says
This is so hot, I can’t even stand it. I know where I will be using my $3.00 off gain softner coupons! (I’ve heard they have them for $1.87 @ walmart!) Yes walmart, you can pay me to take softner sheets. Plus they will take Walgreens cats? Can it get any better? :)
Valerie says
yes, we will take the catalinas
Grace says
My Walmart in KY will take Target coupons if they are 1.00 off or such, but will not take the bogo; Unless theses are new rules and they changed it again :(
Holly says
So they will take a catalina from like a Giant or Weis?
Valerie says
yes, we process them as an ad match.
germaine says
Well I’m in LA and I called Walmart corporate 3 times already I bring the coupon policy with me to walmart and they say we dont know where you got this from but we dont honor catalinas we dont even know what that is.So I just stop going to walmart altogether cause its always a problem when I come in with coupons or catalina
