The policy has changed again and not for the better!
You can check out the whole policy HERE.

New updates:

Can I use coupons when price matching?

A guest can use coupons when price matching per Target’s normal coupon policy. When the guests presents a coupon(s), these steps will be followed:

Manufacturer Coupons:
Manufacturer coupons will be applied after the price match is made.

Target Coupons:
Target coupons will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target coupon has been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor’s price.

Combining both a Target and Manufacturer Coupons:
The Target coupon will be applied before the price match is made. If the competitor price is still lower than the price after the Target coupon has been deducted, the ad match can be adjusted to match the competitor’s price. Once the price match is made the manufacturer coupon will be applied.

Reminder: We accept one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item unless either coupon prohibits it.

This is not true price matching. I got stopped doing a price match the other day – the simple transaction took 1 hour and 15 minutes and four supervisor/managers to figure out. UGH! Who has time for this? I’ll be heading to Walmart from now on! Target is going to be left behind this shopping season becuase of all their restrictions.

I honestly believe that this is just being done for the holidays; for some reason I think that after, lets say, the first week of January the policy will become more lenient.

Now, this begs the question, if we as consumers are confused about this policy [and its many changes], how the heck are employees to understand?! I can tell you all quite bluntly that in months past, using this site for my couponing education, I knew more about Targets policies than their employees [because it was in my interest to do so]!

So, I’m guessing, in a nutshell no coupons when price-matching because Target will not actually beat a competitor’s price.

  3. Heather says:

I just emailed them last week and they said I could use a coupon and price match, now this. How do they expect us to keep up when they change their policy every week? UGH!

  4. Melissa says:

Yes it seems like Target only wants to say they do price matching so they can claim to price match. I think that it is a shame that they have updated the policy twice in the same week, but that’s their right I guess.

I get that they don’t want people to price match, use the target coupon and a manufacturer’s and then walk away with stuff for basically free. My guess for why they are taking the target coupon first before the price match is that the target coupons are probably at some level either sponsored by target corporate or even by the manufacturer’s in part so that by using that first it minimizes the amount of markdown that a store must actually take in when honoring a price match. Basically either corporate or a manufacturer covers at least some of the target coupon so that the individual store makes money. This is just a guess on my part though, I don’t work for target although I do work retail.

      Melissa,

They should just say they don’t accept coupons with price match. really that is what is saying.

  5. Mary says:

Please forgive me if this has been asked, but if you are going to price match, why would you use a target coupon at all?

For example, you are price matching a 19.99 target item down to 15.99 based on a competitor’s price. You have a 3.00 target coupon. You use the coupon to get the Target price down to 16.99 and THEN the cashier just price adjusts to 15.99 anyway. Why even bother 3.00 coupon?

    Am I missing something?

    • Shannon says:

      Mary,

This new change it doesn’t make sense right! Basically they are saying you cannot use a coupon with the price match!

  6. Jennifer says:

That gave me a headache reading all of that! I honestly don’t even see the point of price matching at Target because it seems pretty obvious that they really don’t want to price match but want to be able to say that they do I am sure to compete with Walmart. I love Target but things like this drive me crazy!

  7. LISETTE says:

BY THE WAY WHEN WAS THIS UPDATED?

  8. LISETTE says:

THI IS BECOMING FUNNY ON HOW TARGET ARE BREAKING THEIR LITTLE HEADS TO MAKE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO TAKE FREE OR NEARLY FREE STUFF WITH PRICE MATCHING.DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF YOU CAN DO PRICE MATCH IN TARGET GIFT CARD OFFERS AND AFTER THIS CAN YOU STILL USE COUPONS?.IT DOESNT REALLY SPECIFY ABOUT GIFT CARDS.

  9. Shelly says:

I go to Walmart with all of my ads on Black Friday. They price match as long as it’s for the same exact item and it cannot just have % off in ad, there has to be a price. I just took ToysRUs ad to Walmart yesterday to get some of the advertized Leapster games for $12.49 and was able to use their ad, b/c although the ad said 50%, it also had the price listed for the games at 50%. Also, the special was only good until 1pm at ToysRUs, so I had to make sure that I made the purchase before 1pm at the Walmart store. Good Luck. It’s so much fun to go just to one store and relax, if you can believe that it’s possible. Remember on black friday to take your list of items from each ad and on what page number so that when you check out, you get out of the store quickly.

  10. Danielle Spence says:

i am confused. will the computer recognize all these rules? we have to price match after we buy, but i didn’t think the computers were smart enough for all of this!

  11. denise says:

Walmart does not price match percentages, only dollar amounts.

  12. Michele says:

“coupon for the same item unless either coupon prohibits it.”

This is causing some issues when I try stacking b.c coupons say one per purchase.

  13. Dizzy Mommy says:

    Shannon,
I emailed Walmart to get a current copy of there price match policy. If you would like I will send it on to you once I get it. That way we do not have any similar problems as Target with the non-stop changes.

  14. Dizzy Mommy says:

At this rate by the time Christmas is over Targets policy will be to Price match only stores within a 20 meter radius of the building (not parking lot), plus now why would I go to Target for the price match and spend my money there when I drive right by Meijer and all the other stores on my way…. I’m def. going with Walmart on the price matching thing. I have heard Walmart will price match on Black Friday also… if this is true then that means I don’t have to race across town to Kmart in the morning just for Handy Mannys motorcycle. Does anybody know if Walmart will price match an ad that states 50% off normal retail of 34.99… making it 17.50.
