I told you about the laptop smashing dropping incident HERE the other day.
Today, my dryer decided to make a noise I have never heard before. It sounded like a farm animal was being injured.
This happened right after my microwave wouldn’t get hot and my iron wouldn’t even turn on. I kid you not. I couldn’t make something up that funny.
My dryer is 9 years old, a Maytag Neptune. When we purchased it, Neptune had the hottest, new front loading washing machine. I thought it was so cool.
So, I know that a new laptop is going to have to wait. The dryer is a necessity.
It seems like all my stuff is going to break at once. We bought our fridge, freezer, washer and dryer at the same time almost 10 years ago.
Why I am writing about this? Stuff happens. Stinky, expensive stuff.
I’m thankful for my frugal lifestyle right about now. I will be able to buy a dryer and still eat.

When it rains it pours! I would be scavenging Craigslist! At least you get to do some shopping!
Try an appliance repair person first. It might be repairable.
You know how on facebook you can click a “like” button about a posting? Not that it’s “likeable” to need a new dryer, but you really need such a button on your blog. Just sayin’ haha
Jolon,
he he that would be great.
I think there’s some sort of conspiracy between household electronics and machinery. Things never break one at a time, they all like to get in on the ‘fun’!
I haven’t been following your blog for very long, but its been really helpful to me! My husband used to work in the repair department of an appliance store and said that most likely the nylon washer in the back has worn out so the drum is resting metal to metal creating an awful shriek, but there are still washers in place so it would sound like an animal screaming. (His demonstration was hilarious!) Anyways, he said that it should be a relatively inexpensive fix. Good luck! He did mention that if it was electrical, there would be a buzz or a beep.
Jen,
Anyway you can get your husband on video making the noise?? I Need a good laugh.
It looks like something electrical happened ( I am stupid when it comes to this stuff) because now it turns on for 30 seconds and goes off. It has been slowly fading over the past year. Clothes take really long to dry. I am not sure it makes sense to fix at this point. Jen, question for your husband.,how long do dryers typically last? I do about 15 load a week.
He agreed it might be time to replace it, especially if its 9 years old. Even if you get it fixed, there may still be other underlying issues. He says 5 years is good to get out of a dryer getting 3 loads a day. A friend of ours is still a salesman in the business and says that GE is now making the best frontloading washers and dryers, next Whirlpool. Sometimes Kenmore, because usually GE or Whirlpool make them, but Frigidaire is making some, and they are crap as he says. Good luck!
Also, if you are picking it up yourself, and installing it, usually Home Depot or Lowes are the way to go, but check with a local appliance dealer as well, because they usally will try to work a deal with you to match prices and may do free delivery.
When my dryer made a sound like that the heating coil had snapped and was being scraped along as the drum turned. We had a warranty for the repair but it would have cost $200 – more than we had but less than a new dryer!
Angela,
So you have heard the noise!! It scared the living daylights out of me.
Quick question – did your dryer take longer to dry before this happened? I mean did it seem like it was longer and longer over time?
I hear ya! I am waiting right now for a service guy to come put in a gas shut off in our kitchen. Our range went bad and I went to Sears to pick out a new one. (They are on sale and have a rebate for delivery
))
Course nothing is ever that easy since the one we have is ancient we don’t have the proper gas shut off on the main level of our house. Sooo have to call another guy to come and put that in before the new Range can be installed. (EXTRA MONEY!!)
This morning I go just for the heck of it and try to see if the old one works again. BIG mistake! It has sort of fixed itself and I was ready to call the whole thing off and save the money. My DH vetoed me since the one we have is so old. His quote “So just because it is working this minute you are going to cancel? What happens when it doesn’t work tomorrow?”
So here I sit waiting for the first guy to call and fix the gas line.

Not sure where you are at – I just started following… Lowes regularly has coupons. I have found them at the post office in the address change form packets and just recently on rolls of blue painters tape in a special floor display. Also, I ‘should’ be able to e-mail them to anyone who wants one through a promo at my office. Lowes also price matches and then takes 10% off (although I have to ask for the 10%). Home Depot also takes Lowes coupons. I am not sure about their price matching policy.
Kristin,
Lowes is exactly where i was thinking of going. My mom recently purchased a washer from there. It was on sale at Home Depot for $450 and then they gave her an additional $45 off.
Thanks for this tip. Maybe I need to do an appliance shopping post!
About your computer, if you have Verizon as your internet provider, they have an insurance policy you can purchase for just $20 a month. It covers phone, tv and computer. If anything goes wrong with any of them, they bring a guy out and they try to fix it, free of cost. If they can’t fix it, they replace it.
Cheaper than buying a new laptop.
Michelle,
Unfortunately I live in the sticks. Our phone company services about a 20 mile radius and thats it. They didn’t even have unlimited calling a few years ago.
girl.. I can totally relate. A few months ago our garage doors had to be replaced when one door wouldn’t close and one of the windows busted out when my husband tried to close the door and then we had to have all 4 tires on my van replaced and not just the regular we have the run flat tires which are ridiculously expensive and then my washer decided to stop in the middle of the wash cycle. So.. the money just poured out of our pockets for a while. Hopefully things are going to take a turn for the better.. for you too girl!
Hey Shannon!
Is it weird that I have the same dryer, that is nearly the same age and JUST started doing the same thing?
Mine still dries fine, so I’m going to have a repairman take a look at it.
Consider going to Queen’s Appliances or Sears scratch and dent. Way better prices than everywhere else.
