Help Me Pick a New Laptop

My best buddy, Big Bertha is on her last leg.  She is 5 years old and she is missing keys, her screen is hanging on by a thread. Big Bertha is a Hewlett Packard laptop that has served me well.  However, she is tired now.  My son added to it by dropping her! Her speakers fell off.

I am not sure I want to buy another HP laptop, because I don’t know if it can live up to Big Bertha. I currently have a Acer Netbook, which is great for traveling, but not day to day blogging. I have thought about a MAC or a Dell.

So help me pick a new laptop. What do you recommend?

I lived the Mac life for a loooooong time when I was in school and then after in advertising. They are ok, but a bit buggy compared to PCs in my opinion. There is also a bit of a learning curve as the operating system is different.

That being said, I’ve been on PCs for the last few years and love it. My laptop just died and we bought a Dell laptop at Best Buy for $399. I think it’s this one (base model): http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-1545?c=us&l=en&s=bsd. But, they do not have it listed on bestbuy.com any longer. Might want to check the store if you’re interested. Or, it looks like you purchase it on dell.com for $399 plus shipping.

On one of the Kellogg’s rebates (must be postmarked by 9/30/09) there is a 10.00 rebate, plus a 70.00 coupon code for dell. If you can wait that long….

      Jen,

Most definitely recommend getting a Mac. I made the switch 2 1/2 years ago & will NEVER go back. They’re fast, reliable, and have a great warranty if you pay a little extra (though I only used mine for a crack from wear & tear – I’ve never had an actual hardware problem which is amazing). Mac’s are so worth the money!!!

I have a MAC laptop, HP desktop and my husband had a Dell laptop. The Mac and Hp are both wonderful, my husband’s Dell crashed last week for no reason and it has taken over 3 days to restore it, plus he lost a bunch of stuff. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my MAC. I don’t print from it – Lexmark printers (which is what I have) don’t work with MACs. And since I have a desktop I don’t need to buy a new printer right now.

    • Shannon says:

      Stacy,

Are there alot of printers that don’t work with Mac?
I am just wondering because I bought a new Brother and wouldn’t want to have to replace it!

  5. Shannon – you read my mind!! I am going through the same decision now, so I anxiously await your results!!!

Oh and printing coupons is not a problem at all on a mac with firefox!

Our Compaq died in 3 weeks and walmart wont take it back after 2 weeks and since it was the screen that went out, Compaq will not warranty it. They only warranty their motherboard and hardrives. So now we are out $400! Plus customer service for HP and Compaq are terrible. They were very rude. They wouldn’t let me speak to the supervisor about the problem. They said they are not allowed to let me talk to anyone above them. So we went out and bought a mac and are so pleased! Mac was our first choice (I have owned one forever and it never breaks), but since we were trying to save money we thought we’d go cheap. Well you get what you pay for. The mac is so much faster and their customer service are great. I will never buy a HP or Compaq (or a PC) again and will always buy a mac from now on!

I have been using a Dell Inspiron 1520 for two years and I love it! I’m not a techie so everything about my computer seems perfect and fast. The WiFi is terrific when I go to Starbucks or my local library.

I have been using a Mac for 2 years now and absolutely love it! Everything about my laptop seems easier, faster, and all around better. My boyfriend has a Dell and has had several problems with it.

At work I use a PC, and I cannot wait to come home and use my Mac. It was more expensive than a PC, but it was worth every penny. I will never go back. Hope that helps!

    • Shannon says:

      Deidre,

If you don’t mind — how do you find it when you are printing coupons, etc?

I am worried about that with the Mac.

      Thanks!

Honestly I LOVE my MAC!! I never want to own a PC again. It’s so easy to get used to and the performance is just great. I just got the basic one (3yrs ago) and it’s been good for all my needs.

Since my hubby was laid off in Jan, when his Mac died in April we did get a compaq and it’s fine. He can’t wait to get another Mac someday because Macs are so much faster. When I restart my Mac it is so much faster. The internet feels faster, etc.

The only downfall is IE. For some reason Internet Explorer stopped being Mac friendly about 4 or 5 yrs ago. But I used Safari and print my Qs just fine ;) .

Ahhh…I could go on all day! LOL! Funny because when I met my hubby I thought he was being silly about Macs until I started using his. Then I fell in love with both of them!

    • Shannon says:

You answered my question about the coupons. I don’t use IE so much, I use mostly firefox and chrome, but I cant lose my ability to print my coupons!

I use scribefire for blogging too.
