Do you remember playing on the recess yard in school? It is funny, but at 35, I can still remember specifics about my 4th grade playground. I spent countless hours playing hop scoth and kick ball with my friends. I remember the year my school got their first wooden swing set with the awesome covered, swirly slide. I laugh now, but back then that slide was big!
There was just something about getting out there and playing. Whether we were soaking up the sunshine or kicking aside the snow – we just loved being outside. This weekend, Evan spent 5 hours running around outside, being a kid. I think it is so important for our children to get outside and play, both at home and school.
Danimals is sponsoring a great program, called “Rally for Recess” which creates healthy competition, pitting school against school. Five schools have the opportunity to win new playground equipment and an all-day recess celebration. Through February 8, 2012 purchasers can find codes on Danimals packaging (or free by mail) to enter and register their school online. The top school in each of the five categories (based on size) with the most codes registered wins!
In the past twenty years, children have lost an average of 8 hours of recess a week. Danimals Rally for Recessis a national initiative designed to create healthy competition, pitting school against school. Go to Danimals Rally for Recess for a chance to win $20,000 for your Elementary school playground. Plus each day Danimals is giving recess-related prizes to keep kids healthy and active. I have partnered with Dannon/Danimals to help promote the “Rally for Recess” campaign. I have been compensated for my time and commitment to the program, which includes writing about the promotion and product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments. Contest Rules.

We used to play “jail” with the monkey bars that were in the shape of a half sphere that went to the ground…we ran around and caught robbers and put them in jail!
Our school also used to have a huge slide built into the hill behind it, and I remember when I was in Jr High and we’d play other schools in sports, all the kids from the other schools would always want to take a turn down the slide before they left to go home! They have since torn down that playground, slide, and even the school!!!

My grade school’s playground was pretty sparse, not a lot of equipment to play on, but we had balls and jump ropes. Instead of equipment, they had painted hopscotch, 4-square and other such games on the blacktop. I always loved playing kickball on the school’s baseball diamond during recess. We would have games with tons of kids involved. If it was time to go in, we would just pick up where we left off at the next recess.

I remember getting on the carousel that you could push and go real fast. It is a wonder that we were not injured because we always had at least 6 kids on it and another pushing.

Loved running around and playing with all my friends. My favorite was the monkey bars and swings. Wish schools would allow more time for recess as young ones need that time outside.

Aww! My children go to the same school that I went to and even though they have gotten rid of the wooden playground equipment that had everything including a bridge, and the see saws, and the monkey bars, and the jungle gym, and the balance beams, there is still a tire that is there with the new plastic metal stuff that I used to hide in and would jump on top of, it’s very reminiscent seeing my kids do the same thing.
