So I just hooked BasicTalk today. Had cable company phone service. So far, so good. Seems as good as my cable VoIP I had before.

I purchased Basic Talk 2 days ago, and because of internet and router problems, brought it back to store. Cannot cancel account online. When I call customer service I am told I will be transferred to an agent at which point the call is cut off. This has happened more than once. Too bad I will have to go to the bank in order for account to be cancelled. They welcome your money but do not get service.

Just wasted half a day trying to set this thing up. Internet site is no help. Lots of redundancy and half the time is just loops you back to where you have previously been. Not worth any more of my time – back to WalMart with it.

Magic jack=$30/year or like $3 a month…The new models dont need a computer to plug into…you can plug the USB into a cell phone charger and power it that way and then plug in your phone/internet.

I purchased basic talk. The first thing is the set up was not that easy. First Problem: I have DSL internet (Which it said you had to have on the box). When I connected to basic talk nothing happened. I was informed that since I would no longer be using the phone jack, I had to get “stand alone internet(Only Internet that is connected to a phone jack)” or get a new internet provider(My old carrier wanted 62.00 for just internet). I ended up getting a new internet provider. First problem solved. Second problem: Then I wanted to keep my number form my old carrier (In the neam time I was givven a temproary number by basic talk). I fought with basic talk for 10 days to keep the old number. Then I was told by basic talk that “my temporary number would now be my new number (happy calling)” I got so fustrated that I disconnected the basic talk box, and ended up going back to my old provider (got my old phone number and internet service back the same day). Then I had to cancel Basic talk as well as my newintenet service. I will be taking the basic talk box back to walmart first chance I get. Now I see why this is s cheap. Save your money and the agervation. Stay with your old carrier.

I’m beginning to think that Basic Talk is a con. I’ve had a box for almost a year now, but two days ago I received a cancellation notice. I had not asked them to cancel my service, and the only way to get in touch with them is to email them – which doesn’t always work. They say that they are working to solve the problem, but I’m concerned because they have my credit card number. There is no one to call when things like this go wrong. I would strongly recommend NOT using Basic Talk. With all the NSA stuff going on, who knows what that box contains.

Does Basic Talk call cell phones? Does the computer have to be on for the phone to work?
sam says
Your computer need not be on for the phone to work. Your modem need to be on.

I ordered Basic Talk 2 weeks ago. Never got the box and cannot reach anyone in chat. They took the money and yes Vonage owns Basic Talk.
Karen says
Ok i got my box today, i thought my blue internet cable cord would plug in to my cable router, but my on my cable router is to small. say on the paper i need a wi fi router. does anyone know what would be best,

Maybe you want to call customer service at Basic Talk? They’ll probably be able to help you with technical issues.

I need to pay bill but I do not know how
Keri says
There is no way to call customer service. You can only email them or chat online…if anyone responds, that is.
keilana6 . says
I aagree. I want to cancel and am never given someone to talk to. I have no email address for them. At least Magic Jack provides live support on line.
Tim says
someone said they could not call or receive calls from cell phones, is this true?

False

Have been using Basic Talk for more than 6 months now. Not perfect voice quality but ok for the price. Am on my second “box” though, the first one failed within a couple of weeks, but they sent a free replacement right away. Now today the replacement is 5 months old and is acting up, random no dial tone problem, and the internet is working fine. So they are sending me another replacement box. So it seems to me they have a quality problem with the equipment, but what would you expect, they come from China.

Why am I reading that when hooks up to “Basic Talk” they are actually with “Vontage”? and will be under contract? I want to be a customer for Basic Talk but would like to get this info straight first…… thanks!!
Sam says
there is no contract with BasicTalk. BasicTalk and Vonage are two different entities.
Betty brown says
I would like to read a lot more reviews!!!! If I am going to change plans I want a better service.
Nellie says
What if you don’t have wifi but have cable can you still use it
keilana6 . says
I have had Magic Jack for 5 years and it’s mostly been a good experience. At least you can reach someone at customer service (which is on line chat). I haven’t been able to reach any person phone or email with Basic Talk for cancellation.

I recently switched from Vonage to Basic Talk and I am very happy that I did. It is working just fine with excellent clarity and so far no problems plus I will save twenty five dollars a month what more could I want?
Joan says
Can u hook all up in one room where the router is then take your cordless phone in another to talk on
Anonymous says
Yes that is what I have done.
don dunnavlle says
would my router need two ethernet ports???
Lynn Suruma says
Problem with Basic Talk is, if you need to talk with someone about your connection, you can’t find a phone number or an email address to have your concerns taken care of.
Canyondan says
Go to your basic talk account, log in and there is contact information
there. They even have a chat function and they can assist you with
your questions immediately.
