A week ago, I asked for some recipe ideas for apples. Reader Kristen sent me her slow cooker Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal. I decided to try it this weekend. I made it on Friday night before I went to bed and it was waiting for us on Saturday morning.
The ingredients were quite simple! It was so easy to make. I simply put all the ingredients in the crockpot and cooked on low for 7 1/2 hours.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup uncooked steel cut oats (do not substitute instant or rolled oats for this recipe)
- 2-3 medium apples cored – you can peel or leave the peel on – and cut into small squares
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon (adjust to your taste)*
- 1 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon blue agave sweetener (or sweetener of your choice)
- 2 -3 tablespoons brown sugar (adjust to your taste)
- 1 tablespoon of butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
* if you don’t love cinnamon, cut this down to a teaspoon
Directions:
1. Generously spray non stick cooking spray on your slow cooker. {Do not skip this step or you will regret it.}
2. Put all your ingredients in the crock pot. Stir and cook in crock pot for 7 1/2 hours on low heat. Go to bed {optional}.
3. Wake up to deliciousness!

This was yummy, but I think I’ll do a daytime cook on the 4.5 hours suggested as it seems my crockpot also runs high. Also going to do the 1.5 x version to last through the work week as I do oatmeal each day and this will save sooo much time. I used the Truvia stevia/sugar blend, 4 tsp, which is 8 carbs (sugar would be 60). I think 2-3 tsp would be enough as the apples add sweetness already. Thanks for a delicious recipe! Thanks everyone for the tips!

Wow. All i’ve gotta say is i’m HOOKED on this oatmeal. It’s the only thing my bf & I eat weekdays for breakfast anymore. I make a 1.5x recipe to get us through the week on Sunday eve and it lasts til friday. It’s absolutely delicious, thanks for posting such a wonderful recipe!
To save on calories, i omit the honey. Thinking I might omit the butter, maybe. We also add in about 1/2c. finely ground flaxseed powder :) oh and we have a large oval crockpot, so this thing cooks in 4 1/2hours easy. PAM the hell out of the crockpot though, that’s my one piece of advice haha. LOVE this oatmeal!!

I absolutely love oatmeal (as well as my nieces and nephews). The whole family is going snowskiing this weekend, and I am going to be cooking this as one of the breakfast items. I saw a note about a serving size for 3 adults. I would like to double the recipe, but wasn’t sure if it would fit in the crockpot? What do you think?
Thanks for posting such precise directions.

Do you happen to know how to figure out how much sugar to use instead of sweetener? Thanks!
Kerry says
I just read online 1 tsp:3/4 tsp sugar to sweetener or sweetener to sugar, not sure which way. I did a 1 to 1 trade off – I’ll know in the morning how it worked out :-)
Christie says
Awesome! I looked online but didn’t see anything! I hope it works out for you, def. let me know! I have to go buy the steel oats tomorrow so I won’t be making it until then! haha Thank You!!
Kerry says
The flavor was great! Very yummy – I might add a bit more cinnamon/brown sugar next time (we like things sweet). The oats were a bit overcooked, so next time I’m going to cut down the whole process to about 5 hours and see what happens. Finally, although I sprayed the crock pot first, everything stuck
Overall — WONDERFUL!!!

Hmm. Not a fancy one. Just low or high. I’m sure I did high. :>

The last time I tried steel cut oats in the slow cooker they came out mushy. Yours appear to be the right consistency. Will give them another try!
Shannon says
Angela,
Does your crockpot temp run hot? I find that if the temp is too high or they cook to long, they get super mushy – maybe you can reduce the cooking time.
Holly says
I never heard of steel cut oats. Can you get them in a regular grocery store?
Jennifer K. says
In my shoprite, steel cut oats are in the organic/healthy foods section. Not in with the oatmeal and cereals.
alyson g says
Yummy, wanna try this friday nigth for Sat. morning…do you know how many people this serves?
Grace Nelson says
I was wondering if I could use those crock pot plastic liners instead of spraying the crock pot??
Shannon says
Grace,
I am not sure – I Have never used them.
Jennifer K. says
Yummmm!! Do you have any idea how many servings this makes? I cook for 12 tween boys plus our family every other weekend. The boys would loooooove to have this sometime. And I would love to not have to get up at the crack of dawn to fix them a hot breakfast! :)
cat b says
Yikes! 12 tween boys! Good luck with that one :) I use 1 cup of steel cut oats to 4 cups of water to feed three hungry adult hunters at deer camp every morning. 2 guys and 1 gal. I hope this gives you an idea of how much you may need for the lot of you. Good luck!
Beth says
this looks great! And I don’t eat sugar so that makes this recipe even better :) Thanks!

Yummy yum yum yum. Thanks so much!
