How to Save on Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
Is eating more fruits and veggies on your New Years Resolution List? One of the most frequent questions we receive regarding couponing is, “How do I save on fresh produce?” Good question; we rarely see coupons for produce. Seasoned couponers will use catalinas earned on other products, or if your store allows, overage from using coupons on other items. Since many stores no longer give overage (lucky you, if your store does!), how else can we save on fresh produce?
One way to save is to think “outside of the grocery store box.” Yes, it is convenient to pick up your produce at the same time you get your other groceries, but you could see significant savings by shopping other places. Farmers Markets and Produce Stands can be a better option for some people. They offer local produce that cuts out the middle man and shipping costs, which can mean big savings for you. You are also supporting your local economy and local farmers, which is an added bonus.
While Farmers Markets and Produce Stands are good for many families, they may not be as good of an option for small families or single people. Sometimes Farmers Markets and Produce Stands require a large quantity be purchased. Check with the vendor to see if they allow you to break up a package into a smaller purchase. If not, consider freezing or canning produce or maybe splitting the shopping trip with a friend. You can divide the packages and both save some money.
