As you know many of you know, there are Kmart & Sears Stores are closing. I am sure we will see sales and final clearances coming up soon.
Here is a list of Kmart & Sears stores that are currently slated to close. I know there are some of you who really enjoy Kmart Super Doubles. I only see one local Sears closing so far on the list. There should future updates as they expect up to 120 stores to close.
Are there many stores near you closing?
BCar says
The sad part about the reduced prices when stores close is that the prices aren’t’ reduced at all. They make it look like prices dropped by 40%, and all the hyped up signs saying everything must go, CLOSEOUT SALE. I walked into KMart yesterday, and saw hot wheels priced on sale at 6.99. Its regular price was 11.99. I’ve been buying hot wheels for over 25 years, and have never seen it at 11.99. In fact the regular price today is 5 – 7.00 dollars. I also looked at tents that normally sells (2 Man tent) for 49.99. I saw it on sale for “58.99” and claimed its regular price was 83.99. Children’s bikes normally around $60. Price marked up to $109, and sold for $75 as the “sale”. We’re not talking Mongoose or Schwinn or Barbie, not even TMNT, just a plain simple bike. The uninformed employee says, “We’re going according to the prices in the mainland.” She should have said, “Sorry that’s not my department.” and kept her mouth shut.

A J.C. Penney store near me closed this Spring and I was surprised how fast it was – only a month or two from initial announcement to lights out. I don’t know if they even had a going-out-business sale. Of course, Kmart may be different since it stocks perishable items like food.

Shame on all of you that are happy to see Kmart’s closing. I happen to just lost my job at the one on Wise Va, because it closed. I don’t know how the stores you went to or worked at were, but we all tried to make the store better and had a great work environment. We all were heart broken.
John McFarland says
Also since it was the only other show in town, Walmart has started to raise prices. Our next closest store is over an hour away

I’m glad to see this brand going away. I worked for them for a couple of years and it was the most awful job I had. From being threatened by management to work over the holidays with lines like “well, if you like to pay your rent with more than just your parents money, you should ask to work the holiday” and generally just hating everything about the people who shopped there. It was always the same 20 or so people on a daily basis. Kmart was more interested in selling the bonus points cards and selling peoples emails for ads and spambots than actually trying to save money. And right now the walmart in my town has better quality goods, cheaper prices, and the employees seem more happy and willing to work extra hours than the lackluster job the employees do.
I know the experience i’ve had could be different than yours, but the one in my town needs to go, and soon.
Anonymous says
I too HATE Kmart with a passion. I work for them and can not deal with how they have no morale. Prior to working for them I never shopped there and feeling how I feel about them now I would never shop there. I’ve never been so miserable at a job before in my life.

SHOP AT ANY KMART THEN!!! THAT’S THE WAY TO KEEP THEM RUNNING!!!

Why they are rude and have horrible customer service
Sheila Sherer says
I think this is a terrible thing . Walmart’s product are made in foreign countries , k’mart is homespun products and so is Sears. the product are so much better. also cheaper in the long run.
peggy dixon says
yeah well, i know that walmart sucks, treats their employees bad, has their hand in every bad pie, kmart has better brands and clothes are better, just dont have what walmart has or doesnt here in tennessee
Terry Shinn says
Well, if Kmart closes enough stores, walmart will have their wish, a monopoly on reail stores that are open 24/7/364! Alright Kmart corporate, get with the rogram! I have been a Kmart “girl” since I was a child and we had to drive into another county to shop!! When Sam Walton was alive, the quality was good, America made was a great thing. People get so tied up in “self”, no wonder we have so many lost jobs, good stores! Go back to rolling up the sidewalks @ 6:00 pm, on Sundays, and we ALL will see a different world! Hit your knees!

Hey you didn’t use CAPS…. You need English. lol. Seriously, nobody types perfect anymore, this is 2013. Just look at how people type in Facebook! I’m sure they know perfect English. And yeah… Walmart Sucks!! Use their Android App and scan any item in the store. Even though items are in your hand, it says out of stock! And their only excuse is 3rd party controls webpage. I wish I could say that crap to my customers! They would try to kick my ass!!!!

Plwase do not close the K Mart in Sweetwater, Texas. Since you closed the stores in Midland and Odessa. Texas we stop there every time I have to make my medical trips to Dallas. The only other time we are able to to El Paso, Texas to visit my sister. We are not Walmart fans. Since you left this area
there prices are sometimes higher than high end department stores. Please consider coming back to our area. They run stores like you out by dropping prices so low while they have compitition. they raise there prices in small towns out ragously high. Your clothes and products are much better quality than walMart has now, We really miss you.
Louise P says
I total argee with you, the only way to keep Walmat from mulation of the costs we need other stores, Walmart is banking on the fact that the other stores will close because of there low cost low quality of products.

My K-Mart in the area is a disatery mess whenever I go in it. I don’t know if it’s the customers who make it all ghetto or if it’s the employees who don’t straiten up their shelves at night. Not one associate there nor at my local Sears has ever approached me asking me if I need a hand – it seems to be the customers’ responsibility to find some help.
Mayu says
The Sears near me has a ‘going out of business’ banner up. The K-Mart is still open, our local paper stated it is not currently on the closing list, but at the time, only one list had been published, supposedly there is a second round of closings due out. Not sure if they came out yet or not. I’m assuming not because I can’t find our Sears store on the lists available, yet it was one that is closing

Gee people businesses close all the time! It is the economy. People will find other jobs.
Dave M says
It’s unfortunate for the employees but this has been in the making for the last 25 years. Back then Kmart brass let their experienced managers leave to go to Target and others for more money that they didn’t want to pay. Their attitude was you can be replaced “Don’t let the door hit you in the rear on the way out” You letting your best managers leave to the competition will eventually catch up and it did starting in ’94 and they haven’t recovered since. Too bad because Kmart and Sears are about to go the way of the Dodo bird or the Dinosaurs. It is retails version of the Titanic and there aren’t enough lifeboats for all.
TMC says
I am not surprised that the bulk of these closings are Michigan, Florida and Georgia. The economies in these states have been very bad. Much of the northeast was spared in this round, but I suspect some surpises to happen as the last 20-40 stores are going to be California and New York / New Jersey– however they’re waiting to drop that bombshell with management as long as they can!
There is s silver lining, as I suspect as Sears/Kmart retreats from the still lucrative Northeast market, some southern stores will try their hand at the Northeast, particularly New York. The northeast is a lynchpin for becoming the 3rd biggest “BIG BOX” retailer outside of Walmart, and Target.
jo says
I worked for kmart 99-00. I was in the first round of after christmas layoffs. I was called seasonal help by the publicist then along with 9 others in our department some of which had been there since the store opened five years earlier. We all were part of the loss prevention team at our local super k. The store remained open for another year but ultimately closed. They got rid of stores then that had high leases, high crime, low sales, and some that just happened to be in the wrong place because cc

That’s because they treat their employees like nothing and the pay is awful. Morale there is horrible.
Kmartemployee says
Exactly, no moral. I work as a cashier in a Panama city Kmart and we have gone several years without working air conditioners, our managers are always quitting. We never get raises and now that kmart uses those stupid loyalty rewards cards we are expected to fill these quotas. Something impossible to accomplish since everyone in town has one. An yet no one uses theirs even if we ask. Our managers treat us like idiot mules, there is no teamwork and our customers hate us even if we’re polite. What’s the point in trying after all of that?!
Gina says
They just converted our local Sears Grand to a completely remodeled Kmart and its quite nice; kind of like a melded Sears and Kmart all in one. It’s brand new so it’s still nice and organized inside; hopefully it will remain that way. Thankfully it wasn’t on the list.
My heart goes out to all the employees who are going to lose their jobs.

Ours in town closed almost 2 years ago. There will be mark downs & the good stuff will disappear quickly. Some things will linger even at 70% off. But the empty building, certain brands I loved, & all the people that now need to find somewhere to work are the really sad things.

I’m sorry people will lose jobs however the Kmart in my area (which is not closing) is the worst. It’s dirty, unorganized and the people that work there hate their job and are so miserable, I went on the last double up to 1.00 coupon day and NO ONE including the customer service rep new about it and the funny part is that there was a store announcement/commercial about it AND when my receipt printed there was a little reminder about it. I went to the store around noon and after having to argue with the very rude cashier about the coupons I said “I can’t be the only one that’s come here today with coupons to double” she then told me I was….. I told her that wasn’t sayin much for Kmart and they were probably all over shopping at Walmart. I go to Kmart maybe two to three times a year IF that because of reasons like that.

It’s sad to see these stores close. I’ve gone to our local Kmart a few times and the prices were really high for some reason. In Hawaii that’s one of the only places we had to shop and business was booming there. Sears is sad because they have quality tools and stuff like that. The rest of their products are kind of mediocre.

This is not enough. To keep Sears or K-Mart, one chain has to go. They sell the same stuff. and advertise twice to do it. Shut one down, and make a commitment to the other. And close one store if there are two (one of each) in the same shopping area. This is common sense folks!!

Teresa, You are right about the lost jobs. It was the first thing I thought of too. However, liquidation prices and closeout sales are very very important for the other stores to remain in business. If they do not sell what they have left, more stores will be shut down and more jobs will be lost. So if its closing, it is best to advertise it.

I think before we see super sales the closing stores will probably send their inventory to others stores that aren’t closing…..just my opinion

Actually, I was speaking to a manager today at the closing store (he alerted me of the this) and they intend on selling off their inventory and already making plans for it.

I worked for kmart during the last round of store closings and they sell off as much of the inventory as possible then they ship whats left right at the end to another store that is closing to try and get it all gone. They will close in waves so they can do this. They also keep the employees on that want to stay the longest ones close kto retirement and parttime go the soonest.
