How to Coupon at Target…

Welcome to Learn to Coupon …. in 30 Days. We are finally back!  Today we are focusing on learning how to save at Target.

You can see all the prior Learn to Coupon series here.Today we will be discussing couponing at Target. We will break down the coupon policy and matchups. Target’s Full Coupon Policy can be found here.

The best way to save at Target is stacking coupons.
Stacking Coupons

Target accepts one Manufacturer Coupon and one Target Store Coupon for the same item.  This means that you may use two coupons on one item, as long as one is a Target Coupon and one is a manufacturer coupon.

There are four main sources of Target Store Coupons:

You can find Target Printable Coupons on the Target Website here.   To print a coupon from the Target site, select the coupon you would like to print. You will be required to install a printer application.

The number of prints are limited by computer. They should not be photocopied.

You can find Target Coupons in your Sunday Coupon Inserts.  These coupons will vary by region. Even though these coupons are found in inserts with other manufacturer coupons, they are still Target Coupons.

You can find Target Coupons via your Mobile Phone.

Here is how the stacking would work. You would buy 1 Colgate Max Fresh for $2.99.  You would give the cashier:
Colgate Max Fresh $2.99
one  $1.00/1 printable Target Coupon
and one $1.00/1 Manufacturer Coupon
Pay $.99 after coupons

If the coupon values would be over the amount of the Colgate, coupon amount will be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are appliedWe can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.

So there is no overage at Target per the policy. If you have received overage, this would be an error on the cashier.

Here is how your transaction should look if your coupon value was over the value of the item.

Colgate Max Fresh $1.50
use $1.00/1 printable Target Coupon
and use $1.00/1 Manufacturer Coupon
Free after coupon, but no overage

Colgate Max Fresh $1.50
use $1.00/1 Target Mobile Coupon
and use $1.00/1 Manufacturer Coupon
Free after coupon, but no overage

You cannot use a Target printable coupon with a Target Mobile coupon for the same item.

Here are a few key points of Targets Coupon Policy:

1. We do not accept Internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirements.

  • You may not use a FREE item coupon at Target that you have printed from the internet.
  • You may use a FREE item coupon from the inserts.
  • You may use a Buy One, Get One Free coupon at Target that you have printed from the internet.

2. Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free).

  • You may not use a Manufacturer BOGO Coupon with a Target BOGO Coupon to get one free.

3.  A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.  If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon maybe used on the first item. If a Manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.

  • You may not use a $1.00/1 Manufacturer coupon with a BOGO Manufacturer coupon.

  • You may not use a $1.00/1 Target Coupon with a BOGO Target Coupon.
  • You can use a $1.00/1 Target Coupon with a BOGO Manufacturer Coupon.
Colgate Toothpaste $2.99
use $1.00/1 Target Coupon
use BOGO Manufacturer Coupon
$1.99 for two after both coupons

One of the best ways to save at Target is stacking items with Clearance or Temporary Price Cuts.  Clearance sales and Temporary Price Cuts vary by area.  You may use both Target Coupons and Manufacturer Coupons on TPC or Clearance Items.

  1. Ashley

I just made a Target trip and tried to use the printable MFG coupons and was told I couldn’t use more than one because it had the same sequence number. This has never happened! I did the same haul last night and all my (4) coupons scanned for the toothpaste I was buying. I was denied the whole transaction. Has anyone else ran into this problem with printable MFG coupons?

  2. Norma

Question. I have four like Web Target coupons for 1$ off Loreal advanced hair care and two 5$ off two advanced hair care Manufacturers coupons. Can I use 1 of the 5$ off with two of the 1$off for 2 shampoos in one transaction.? Or can I only use one of the Target coupons with the manufacturers coupon? Thanks

    • Hi Norma,

Do the Target Coupons have restrictions on them like 1 per transaction or customer?

      • Norma

        Hi Shan..
The coupons says One per guest. So I am hoping I can do different transsactions. How can I use them and still get a really good deal?

  3. Georgette Dang

Printed on the target coupons states ” Limit one coupon or offer per guest.” Does this mean i can use one coupon on each item or only one coupon period?

    • Anonymous

That means you may have to take multiple trips through the register, or tell the cashier to ring them up seperately. Do not do TOO many at once — I’ve seen cashiers get angry after I took 20 minutes of their time.

  4. Lisa

question I know you’re not suppose to stack on mfr but when i went to target the other day the cashier said i could use more than one manufacturer on one purchase as long as its a different save amount example $1.00 off $.75 off $.55 off is that correct? is that possible?

  5. Amy

Can I use a coupon on a clearance item at target? I’ve gotten mixed answers from employees…

  6. kat

does anyone know if i can use two of the same coupon for one product for example:
i have 2 manufacturers coupons for 3.00 off one product. that would make it 6.00 off the original price which is 18.99 + tax. help? im new to couponing.

    • LJ

No you can’t stack manufacturer coupons on the same item. It would have to be 2 items.

  7. Sam

So, went shopping last night at my local target. I had 10 jergens coupons for $2/1. Made my purchase … Received gift cards, drove home then looked at my receipt…frustration
Sets in, only 2 of my coupons were taken off. Called the store went back in to receive my refund, then had the coupon nazi, wave my 8 coupons in my face calling them excessive. …. Wow since when were. 8 coupons too much? She was a night manager and was taken aback at her lack of friendly customer service and I should of been the one upset that my items were not correctly rung… Called the day manager as there was noting on line stating limited on the amount of coupons used in a transactio… Thanks for
Your information, I’m not a shelf clearer and didn’t walk in with 100 coupons, what would you all consider excessive, perhaps I am over reacting, Sam

    • gigi

just want to let u know its one coupon per item unless its one manufacturer coupon and one target coupon u cant use 2 target coupons for one item.

    • Anonymous

Per Target’s coupon policy: •Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).

and by unless otherwise noted on coupon they mean if the coupon states a limit of less than 4. If no limit is stated on the coupon or if the limit stated is above 4 than Target’s limit is 4. This applies to pealies on products sold in the store as well. The register generally won’t allow more than 4 in a single transaction. You can try to do separate transactions but you are violating the written policy and Target does not have to allow it.
They also have this rule: We reserve the right to accept, refuse, or limit the use of any coupon.

  8. Karla

I seem to have noticed that Target allows coupons to be applied to the tax of the product, I’ve walked out of the store payment pennies for makeup, and that didn’t even cover the cost of the tax alone, this is the only store I know of that allows this, any other store always charges the tax, if nothing else.

  9. Geovanna

I was wondering with Target is there any specific order to give the cashier the coupons. Does the order in what you handed em to them matter? First Target coupons and then Manufactures coupons? Ive saved shopping at target but i am curious…

  10. Debbie

I was wondering if someone can answer a question about Target’s mobile coupons? I will have two items both have mobile coupons via the text they sent me. Should the cashier scan my mobile bar code twice, or will once do it?

    • Shannon

      Debbie, I think its one.

    • veronica

      once is good:)

  11. Erin

Thanks for the thought, Shannon – Yes, I’ve tried three different browsers on my computer. All locked out. Grr! I have been able to print using my husband’s computer, but I’d like to know what not to do so I don’t get his computer locked out, too.

  12. Erin

Thanks for this overview. I love the printable target coupons, but I’ve been locked out! For about two months I’ve been getting the “you’ve reached th limit of what you’re eligible for” error when I try to print (after going through all 13 screens to select the handful of coupons I wanted). So frustrating! I’m really not a big couponer and certainly didn’t abuse anything. By now all the coupons I had from when I was last able to print have been used or expired so I really don’t know why this is happening. This error is mentioned in the FAQ on target’s site, but it really isn’t helpful. It just says that there are limits so you might get this error. Um, thanks. I’d really love any insight or advice you couponing pros may have. Thank you!

    • Shannon

Erin, have you tried a different browser.

  13. Sharon

I didn’t know you could use a BOGO manu Q with a Target Q. Thanks Shannon!

  14. J

I have learned that if you shop at Target with coupons, you should get to know the cashiers that (1) know the policy and (2) make sure each coupon scans. Get in their line even if it is long because it is worth the savings in stress over waiting in the customer service line to fix mistakes.

    • miki

I had a cashier I was absolutely trying to avoid, so I got in the other line, but she had no customers and ended up calling me. I have a feeling everyone in that one line was trying to avoid her too!

      • J

        miki,

I know exactly what you mean!

        J

  15. I love couponing at Target. Some of the cashiers are nicer and do a better job at getting all of the coupons than others, but I’ve been able to snag some really good deals there. I love their clearance! We went last night and I got some Arm & Hammer baking soda in the shaker bottles for $0.36 each on clearance, and also found some Burt’s Bees Baby Wash (8 oz bottle) on clearance for $3.48 (regular $6.99). It was in the health & beauty section, not the baby section.

  16. Marsha

About Target, always make sure all of your coupons are discounted. I am reviewing my receipts from last week and I was jipped 5 bucks in coupon savings… Makes me so upset!!!!

    • Shannon

      eck! thats no good.
